Risk of Stillbirth Higher for Twins with Birth Weight Discordance

A Canadian study looks at stillbirth and twins with a birth weight discordance. The study was published in the Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology Canada in October 2018. The researchers wanted to explore the association between birth weight discordance and stillbirth. They included 12,814 twins. The twins were born in British Columbia, Canada, from 2000 to 2010.

Increase in birth weight discordance

The researchers found that an increase in birth weight discordance was found to be associated with an increased risk of stillbirth. The odds of stillbirth were 5.21 times higher in twins with a birth weight discordance greater than or equal to 30 percent.
