Yams and Twins – Really?

The small Nigerian town Igbo-Ora has almost become synonymous with the words yams and twins. This is due to the town’s high incidence of twins combined with the region’s high dietary intake of yam. Yam is believed by some researchers to induce a higher rate of ovulation due to the fact that yam contains phytoestrogen, an estrogen compound that increases women’s follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH). No one has been able to prove this yet, but nor has it been explained why the birthrate of twins are significantly higher in this region.
