Study Looks at Reasons for Weaning Twins

A new study explores the factors that contribute to weaning in infant twins during the first six months. The results were published in the Journal of Human Lactation in April 2018. The Brazilian researchers used self-reported interviews by 128 women pregnant with twins. They were followed for up to six months. The main reasons for weaning were:

  • Insufficient milk supply
  • Infants’ behavior
  • Mom returning to work

Non-exclusive breastfeeding, lack of support, a breastfeeding duration shorter than 12 months in a previous pregnancy and infants’ birth weight less than 2,300 grams (5lbs, 1oz) were also risk factors.
